Pratt
Truss Bridge Kit
With a whopping 40" of realism, Atlas O's latest structure kit is an incredibly
detailed model of the Pratt Truss Bridge, a common sight on the railroads of
yesterday and today.
Originally
introduced in the solid steam period of the 1930's, the 55
Ton Fishbelly Hopper car thrived until second-generation diesel
days and formed the backbone of some of the great coal hauling railroads. Atlas
O's version captures the nostalgia and heritage of the unique model in true
1/4" details. This hopper will
look
right at home behind your heavy-hauling steam articulated or our popular SD-35
diesel locomotives.
Designed
by the United States Railway Administration during World War I, the first of
these 50-ton Outside-Braced Boxcars
was built in October of 1918. These cars quickly became a common sight on railroads
from coast-to-coast. The USRA design was so successful

that
many single-sheathed
cars built throughout the 1920s were virtual copies, or "clones" with
a variation of the steel ends.
While many of the cars were later rebuilt with steel sides to extend their
service life, several railroads used the as-built cars in maintenance of way
service well into the 1960s.
